The journey began in 2013, when Agriterra partnered with the union to co-create a practical action plan. Through training, coaching, and a solid business case, Raya Wakena strengthened its equity position and secured a bank loan.
The factory was funded in part by the sale of member shares—an initiative that not only raised over 1 million ETB (€38,000), but also increased ownership and commitment among members. A production surplus led to a contract with the Ethiopian Grain Trade Agency, securing sales of 19,000 quintals of wheat.
“When I first stood in front of the group in 2015, I wondered what the outcome would be. One year later, there was a functioning flour factory, 80 new jobs, and a strong HR team. Raya Wakena has taken a huge step forward.”
Today, the factory provides a guaranteed market for local farmers and creates employment for 80 people. More than just a business, it’s a symbol of shared investment, collaboration and long-term growth.
This success is the result of local determination and smart partnerships. Agripooler Jacqueline Niessen (Avebe) contributed HR advice and inspired trust by sharing relatable Dutch cooperative examples. Alongside local Agriterra consultant Ysakor, she helped build professional capacity and team confidence.
Together, they’ve sown the seeds of change.
